Workshops

Topics:

Stories in Motion

This topic will focus on how dance can tell a story. It will teach children how to create and interpret stories through movement. The workshop will relate the student’s composition and story telling/writing tools learned in their English class to creating choreography. Students will learn what some of the movements in our choreography mean and will come up with their own meaningful movements.

Math and Science Matters

This topic focuses on basic physics and numbers. This workshop is designed to introduce children to how choreographers use numbers and music mathematically to create choreography and movement patterns. Science topics will also integrate and teach the importance of knowing the human anatomy and gravity, which allows dancers to be able to move through space.

Elementary

Children's Yoga Class

Age: K – 6th Grade

Duration: 1 hour

Workshop I is a 1-hour class designed for K through 6th graders with little or no dance experience to those that are presently taking dance classes. The workshop will not focus specifically on dance technique, but will focus on movement creation and mind/body challenges offering children the opportunity to work as a group and as individuals by learning a task to be accomplished in a particular amount of time in a group or solo and then performing the final product for the class. These ‘games’ or ‘tasks’ are designed to inspire strong leader and follower qualities, to build confidence in oneself, to o

pen doors and avenues for movement creativity and to increase physical activity, musicality and coordination levels.

Stories in Motion

Middle and High School

Age: 7th – 12th

Grade

Duration: 1 hour

Workshop II is a 1-hour class designed for 7th – 12th graders with little or no dance experience to those that are presently taking dance classes. This workshop, as in Workshop I, will not focus specifically on dance technique, but will focus on movement creation and mind/body challenges offering children the opportunity to work as a group and as individuals by le

arning a task to be accomplished in a particular amount of time in a group or solo and then performing the final product for the class.

In Workshop II, BoSoma will also introduce movement studies focused on how Anatomy and Kinesiology are intimately related to dance training as well as the techniques behind choreography. This Workshop will also compare that of the student’s English Composition class to Choreography Composition which allows an clear understanding of how a choreographer processes to come to the end result of a piece of work much like an essay. These ‘games’ or ‘tasks’ are designed to inspire strong leader and follower qualities, to build confidence in oneself, to open doors and avenues for movement creativity and to increase physical activity, musicality and coordination levels.

Lecture Demonstration: Elementary - Pre-Professional

Duration: 1hour

Workshop III is a 1-hour Lecture Demonstration, which will be age specific, designed for all groups K - 12th graders to University. The hour will consist of an interactive discussion with the students, lead by the Artistic Directors of BoSoma, using the company dancers as demonstrators for a fun, interactive learning opportunity for the students to see the relevance and relation of dance to their lives and studies. The subjects of the lecture formatted per age range will include but are not limited to the Crafting of Choreography, Anatomy and Kinesiology and Music. Lectures upon request may be specifically designed to discuss topics that a class may be studying.
